Sheriff Reports New Jail Tracking System and Rising Jail Population

August 13, 2026 government, public meetings, dickinson county, public safety, jail

Dickinson County Sheriff Jerry Davis reported that the jail population had risen in the past week to 35 inmates, up from a usual range of about 25 to 27. He said 30 were male and five female, with three held for out of county, including Riley County and Morris County.

Davis said the office has implemented the Guardian RFID system in the jail, a handheld device jail staff use during inmate movements and checks. He said the system allows staff to document contraband with photos and video, dictate reports in real time, monitor the timing of jail checks and track special inmate diets. He said the jail check compliance rate had reached about 99 percent and called the system "really impressive."

The sheriff also reported he is working toward electronic jail medical records, is in a holding pattern on new fingerprint machines while awaiting a company response, and has extended a conditional offer to a new jail employee pending psychological testing, which would bring the jail to full staffing.

Davis said the office's enterprise rental vehicle fleet is working well, allowing the office to reduce its inventory by an estimated two or three vehicles. He noted two vehicles had engine issues but were quickly repaired and returned to service.
