Proposed 305-Foot Communications Tower Near Abilene Returns for County Review
A proposal for a 305-foot guyed communications tower near Abilene is returning to the Dickinson County Planning Commission after being tabled in April.
Vertical Bridge is seeking a conditional-use permit for the tower on a 31.7-acre agricultural parcel in the 2200 block of Fair Road. Application materials say the project is intended to improve cellular coverage. County staff reported receiving public concerns about the tower’s location, height and emissions.
The site is within the Abilene Municipal Airport height-restriction area. The City of Abilene Board of Zoning Appeals granted a height variance in July, while airport officials told county staff the location could affect future runway plans. County staff recommends approval only after final Federal Aviation Administration and Federal Communications Commission approvals are obtained.
The Planning Commission is scheduled to consider the proposal at 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 20, in the Dickinson County Courthouse basement meeting room. The item remains a proposal and had not been approved in the published meeting packet.
