Abilene Receives Nearly $160,000 in August Sales Tax Distribution

Abilene received $159,957.97 in its August local sales tax distribution from the Kansas Department of Revenue, according to the state’s August 2026 distribution report.

The payment was $53,092.91 more than the $106,865.06 distributed to Abilene in August 2025. However, the state report lists Abilene’s year-over-year percentage change as “n/a” because the city’s current 1.1% local sales tax rate took effect July 25, 2025. That rate change means the two August payments are not a clean measure of changes in local taxable spending.

Local sales tax distributions also trail the transactions that produced them. The August payment primarily reflects sales taxes collected in May, rather than purchases made during August.

Through the first eight monthly distributions of 2026, Abilene has received $1,105,884.68. That is $337,938.81 more in raw dollars than the $767,945.87 distributed during the same period in 2025, though the rate change again prevents a direct percentage comparison in the state report.

Dickinson County’s separate county sales tax distribution totaled $439,288.46 in August, up $19,685.79, or 4.7%, from $419,602.67 one year earlier. The county has received $3,048,621.81 through August, an increase of $47,795.07, or 1.6%, from the comparable 2025 period.

For regional context, Saline County received $2,099,920.56 in August, up 14.2% from $1,838,936.65 in August 2025. Its year-to-date distributions reached $15,048,719.28, up 4.9%. The City of Salina separately received $1,678,012.73 in August, a 15% increase from one year earlier.

City and county distributions represent their respective local sales tax levies and should not be added together or treated as portions of one payment.
