Public Hearing Set September 14 on Proposed 2027 Budget and Tax Levy

The City Commission will hold the required Revenue Neutral Rate and budget hearings at 4 p.m. Monday, September 14, 2026, at the Abilene Public Library, 209 NW Fourth Street.

The proposed property tax levy is 50.271 mills — 2.232 mills higher than the 2026 levy. The City says the entire increase is attributable to an additional biweekly payroll in 2027, when the calendar includes 27 pay periods instead of the usual 26. The City states the increase is not for new positions, pay-rate changes, or expanded services. The budget separately includes a 3% cost-of-living adjustment for employees, following no adjustment in 2026.

The proposed budget identifies about $395,000 in continued operating expenditure reductions and roughly $1.348 million in deferred General Fund capital and equipment needs. Residents can review the proposed 2027 Annual Budget and Financial Plan beginning on page 59 of the agenda packet. The budget may be revised before final adoption.
