Abilene Awards $26,050 Bid to Replace Century-Old Water Service Lines

The Abilene City Commission on October 12 approved a $26,050 bid from J&K Contracting Inc. to replace deteriorated water service lines in the area of South Brady Street and Southeast Sixth Street.

Public Works Director Brad Anderson said crews made repeated repairs there this summer and found galvanized service lines believed to date to the early 1900s, badly corroded and leaking. He said there were about seven breaks. He said galvanized lines are also a concern under KDHE lead and copper rule requirements.

Anderson said the lines are long service runs serving three residences, with meters located near the city's old wastewater treatment plant. The city received three bids, opened October 1: J&K Contracting at $26,050, Denny's Plumbing at $29,165.79 and Wilks Underground Utility of Wichita at $53,425.

Anderson said materials will take about 30 days after ordering and that he wants the work done before the ground freezes. Commissioners approved the bid 5-0.
