Abilene to mail annual lead service line notices to homes with lead, galvanized or unknown lines
The City of Abilene will soon mail an annual informational pamphlet to residents whose water service lines are classified as lead, galvanized or unknown, the city announced Wednesday.
No response is required from residents who receive the mailing, according to the city. The Kansas Department of Health and Environment provides the pamphlet content, and all water systems in Kansas must distribute it each year. The pamphlet covers potential lead exposure and steps residents can take to reduce it.
The notices are part of the city’s Lead Service Line Inventory, which Abilene completed to comply with KDHE and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency rules. The city said it will review and update the inventory each year and submit updated reports to KDHE, and residents may be contacted by letter, email or phone for information about their service lines.
The city said it will never ask for payment or personal financial information as part of the inventory, and city staff or contractors visiting a property will carry identification.
Questions about the mailing or service line material can be directed to Public Works at 785-263-3510 or Public Works Director Brad Anderson at [email protected]. More information is at abilenecityhall.com/751/Lead-Service-Line-Inventory-LSLI.
