Abilene Backs USDA Grant Application for Rural Business Accelerator Program
The Abilene City Commission approved a resolution authorizing submission of an application to the U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development for a Rural Business Development Grant to establish a rural business accelerator program.
Tourism Director Julie Roller Weeks told commissioners the city partnered with Dickinson County Economic Development on the application, which seeks nearly $100,000 to help businesses in the region. She said the application was submitted under the City of Abilene because, due to community turnover, the city held the correct login credentials when the Tuesday deadline arrived. Roller Weeks emphasized the application does not commit any city resources but requires a resolution of support, and that the application drew more than a half-dozen letters of support from area businesses.
The program was described as filling a gap in services for small businesses and entrepreneurs. The program would reportedly provide an initial assessment of a business's financial and marketing health, connect owners with industry experts or consultants, and offer implementation funds for tools such as point-of-sale systems. She said a part-time business liaison would meet businesses "where they are" and that the program would serve about three counties through regional collaboration. Eligibility requires 50 or fewer employees and under $100 million in gross revenue.
The commission approved the resolution. One commissioner noted that if future time-sensitive applications arise, the commission could convene an emergency meeting to assist.
